Getting skilled in digital is top on many companies and on people's agenda. With digital skills being pushed everywhere it's really difficult to know how to choose which tools and courses are worth buying or taking time attend.

I am often asked what do you recommend for people getting started with digital? and then i'm almost always asked for specifics like can you link me to a course about how to advertise on Facebook ? or is there a course that shows me how to set up a website? and much more.

The training included here is free or low cost and will really help your business, team or career by helping you to understand and learn about todays most desired digital skills.

  1. Google Digital Garage

Discover a range of free learning content designed to help grow your business or jump-start your career. You can learn by selecting individual modules, or dive right in and take an entire course end-to-end.

Google's Digital Garage courses are also certified and getting certified shows employers that you have a clear understanding of the core concepts of digital marketing. You can also add the qualification to your CV, and easily upload it to your LinkedIn profile.

These free in depth, online courses include:

  • Fundamentals of digital marketing

  • Get a business online

  • Make sure customers find you online

  • Promote a business with advertising

and much more.

What's great about Digital Garage is that the information is easy to access and you can pick it up and work on the courses as and when you have time. There are plenty of videos to watch and each module explains clearly what you will learn. Plus it's entirely free and a very very good place to start.

2. Facebook Blueprint

Facebook has spent a considerable amount of effort creating a platform to help people to learn new digital skills. Facebook say you can build your business or marketing career with their free online training in digital marketing. The short online courses the provide help you to build your business and reach more customers with free, five-minute lessons. You also receive certifications for each course you complete correctly.

It's also worth noting that if you work in digital, in brand or agency and want to get a recognised certification, you can also take the facebook blueprint exam at a Pearson exam centre (There are currently 3 certificates and it cost £150 to sit each exam.)

Courses in Blueprint start simple and get a lot more detailed as you move through them.

For example: How to Create and Manage a Facebook Page for Your Business is a course that will cater to those at the very start and How to get started with Facebook Ads Manager is a little more advanced. The content is easy to navigate and simple to read and is 100% free.

Also look out for small business events that facebook hold as well as those hosted by Enterprise Nation and the fsb for Female entrepreneurs called She Means Business this is an online resource and physical free events for women looking to learn digital skills. #SheMeansBusiness is a space for entrepreneurial women to make valuable connections, learn digital skills, share advice and move forward, together.
