A Guide to GDPR

‘General Data Protection Regulation’…ok, we know it’s not the most exciting topic to read about. However, whether you’re a business owner or an employee, GDPR is actually a really important thing to know about, both for your individual rights and the implications for your business.
What is GDPR?
The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a set of data protection rules which essentially govern how organisations handle people’s personal data. Adopted by the European Parliament and Council in 2016, GDPR finally came into force in May 2018, with European countries allowed to make small changes to suit the specificities of their citizens. GDPR is based around the notion of personal data, which is basically any data that can allow a person to be identified.
Who does GDPR apply to?
GDPR applies wherever any individual, organisation, or company is processing personal data. Under GDPR, individuals, organisations, and companies that are processing personal data are all either ‘controllers’ or ‘processors’ of that data.
